For most clients, your Dashboard menu will go in order like this:
- Dashboard
- Posts
- Media
- Pages
- Comments
- Appearance
- Plugins
- Users
- Tools
- Settings
Some clients may see fewer menu items, and some may see more than this. There could be other items listed here, as well. This is dependent on what themes and plugins are active. For now, we'll just cover the basics.
The Posts section of your site serves any content that is a list, or feed; this applies to clients who have a Blog or News section. In some cases, a custom post type could also be added, including things like Testimonials, Products, Portfolio items, and others. If you do not have a section of your site like one of those described here, then you can safely ignore the Posts section. If you'd like to learn more, you can visit our article on Posts.
All of your uploads are stored in the Media section. This includes photographs, graphics, documents, and some videos. This area is organized by date, in descending order. You can learn more about Media here.
Pages will contain - you guessed it! - all of the pages on your site. Some pages may be public, and some may be drafts, or private. You can even password protect pages, if you need to. More on that in our Pages article.
Comments contains any comments your content has received from visitors. Comments can be enabled or disabled, per your preference. If you are not blogging, or otherwise using the Posts feature of your site, you will not receive comments.
Appearance is the area that handles your website theme, its menus, and widgets. These are more advanced features, and should be handled with extreme caution. More on Appearance can be found here.
Plugins is also a fairly advanced section, and we recommend that you discuss any changes to this section with your Midnight Corp representative.
Users, Tools, and Settings can all be summarily ignored by the average user. If you see these options on your menu, please be advised that you can seriously damage your website by making changes in these areas. Please discuss any changes to these sections with your Midnight Corp representative.
If you would like to learn more about any of these topics, or you have questions that are not answered in our Knowledgebase, please get in touch, and let us know.
