Adding a New User

To add a new user or edit a user profile, visit your Dashboard and click on Users.

Under Users, you'll have three options; All Users, Add New, and Your Profile. To see a list of all users on the site, click on All Users. To Add a New User, click on Add New. When you add a new user, simply fill in a username (all lowercase, no spaces) and a viable email address. You can choose to add other information such as first and last name, and website URL, but these fields are optional. We advise you to leave the password area untouched, and allow the site to send the new user an email with a verification link. Sharing passwords via email and chat is not advised.

The last part of adding a new user is selecting their role. We suggest giving new users only as much access as required. Each role has its own level of access to the site, as explained below:

  • Administrators have the most access, and are considered power users. Only assign this role to users who are experienced with WordPress. An administrator can delete other users, change page and post content, delete pages and posts, and edit, disable, and delete widgets, plugins, and themes. They can also upload to and delete things from the media library, manage comments, and restrict access to content by setting a password or making it private. Too many administrators on a single site can often spell disaster.

  • Editors can add, remove, and edit all pages and posts, upload content to the media library, and manage comments. They can see any contented marked as private, as well. They cannot access or edit themes, plugins, or widgets. This role should be assigned to anyone who is responsible for managing site content, but may not be very experienced with WordPress.

  • Authors can only manage their own content, add and remove their own media library contributions, and moderate any comments on their own posts or pages. They cannot access other content created by other users, and have no access to themes, plugins, or widgets.

  • Contributors can create posts but require a higher level user to approve and publish them. They cannot access the media library at all, nor can they access plugins, themes, or widgets.

  • Subscribers can log into your site, comment on posts, and manage their own profile. They have no access to the media library, plugins, themes, or widgets. This role is commonly assigned as a default to all new users.
Under Your Profile, you can manage your profile and edit the information it contains. Make sure your display name shows something you're happy with, as it will be assigned to everything you create on the site, and will be visible to all site visitors.
