WooCommerce Tips and Tricks

In this article, we'll offer you some of our favorite WooCommerce tips and tricks.

  1. Make sure to use Featured Products - a Featured Product can be displayed on any page of your site and gives you the option of grouping a bunch of unrelated products together to entice your visitors.
  2. Make use of Tags and Categories - Tags and Categories offer another way of grouping your products together in order to offer your visitors an organized, streamlined shopping experience. Example categories for a clothing store would be Women's Clothing, Men's Clothing, or Children's Clothing, while a tag would be something more specific, such as the style of clothing, or a brand name.
  3. Keep your navigation simple and readily available - your store should be easy to navigate for your customers, and you should make sure they have lots of obvious ways to shop; this includes making use of the Featured Products feature, making use of your sidebar and footer widgets, and embedding collections of products into pages through the use of Categories and Tags.
  4. Utilize Descriptions - your products can have two descriptions; short and long. Be sure to use both, and use them wisely. A short description should be a quick blurb, no more than two or three sentences, while a long description can include more information. Keep things clean and looking neat by employing the use of bullet lists whenever possible, rather than long paragraphs of text.
  5. Familiarize yourself with Linking Products - you can link similar products together in order to get them to display on each other's product pages automatically, under Related Products. This is a very useful feature and it's recommended that you take advantage of it.
  6. Keep a close eye on product reviews - you can make sure only verified users are able to review your products in order to avoid spam and malicious reviews. Click on WooCommerce -> Settings -> Products -> and then look for Enable Reviews. Make sure you click on the option to only permit reviews from verified owners.
  7. The magic of CSVs - you can create a single product to export for use as a guideline and add data to the exported CSV for the rest of your products. This is a great way to add a lot of products quickly. If you're unfamiliar, a CSV (comma separated value) is a document that can be opened like a spreadsheet. Go into your WordPress site, add a new product, and fill out all of the fields with information for your first product. Using the plugins recommended in our Recommended Plugins artlcle, you can then export that product into a CSV which you can open with Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, or your favourite spreadsheet software. Note the information and the headers under which it's been exported, and then add the data for the rest of your products using the original product data as a guideline. Then you'll simply import the CSV back into WooCommerce using the same plugin as you did to export it. Your products will be added like magic, saving you a whole lot of time. This method is recommended for users with more than ~20 products.
